FAQ

Where and when will the relay start and finish?

The I&M Canal Trail Relay is Saturday, September 14th and will start at the Brandon Road Trail head in Joliet, IL (Route 6 and Brandon Rd). The relay will finish at the Lock 16 Visitor’s Center in LaSalle, IL, which is just a short distance from beautiful Starved Rock State Park. Teams will start in 30-minute waves beginning at 6:30 AM.  This is needed to manage parking at exchange zones.  Start times will be assigned after teams are registered.

What is the registration fee?

The registration fee is $550 for a team of 5 runners or $600 for a team of 7 runners.

What is included with registration?

All runners will receive an official race tee, access to restrooms and volunteer support along the course, and light refreshments.

How long is registration open for?

Registration opens at 7 PM on May 2nd and is on a first come, first served basis. Registration will close on August 15th or when the event is at capacity, whichever comes first.

Can I receive a refund?

Unfortunately, we are unable to provide refunds for any reason.

What will I need to know about my team during initial registration?

You will need to know if you are doing a 5-person team or 7-person team. Teams can be comprised of five people running three legs each over 65 miles, or seven people running two legs each over 63 miles. You do not need to know all your teammates names and mile pace at time of registration, however we will require this info be submitted as we approach the event. During the initial registration, you will also need to select a team name.

Why is it important to submit my estimated running time?

Because the I&M Canal Trail Relay is a 65 mile race, it is very important that we have all of the runners estimated 10k pace time in order to assign teams the appropriate start times to manage support vehicle parking and to ensure all teams finish the race before sunset.

What is the Mandatory Captains Meeting & Packet Pickup?

The mandatory Captains Meeting & Packet Pickup will be in the southwest suburbs of Chicago, location TBD, the day prior to the race (Sept. 13th) and is mandatory for all Captains. There are two Captains Meeting time options: 12:00 pm and 6:00 pm. Packet pickup for your team materials will be available for the 30 minutes following each meeting time. Attendance for all runners is strongly encouraged. I&M Canal Trail Relay rules, exchange points, the Support Vehicle Guide and other topics will be covered during the meeting. Attendees will have an opportunity to ask questions, as well. Registered teams will receive team member bibs, support vehicle numbers, and event shirts. The registration process will verify team SIZE, DIVISION and CLASSIFICATION as well as validate a match between registration data and team configuration.

How many support vehicles can we have?

There is only enough parking at some exchange zones for one vehicle per team. Teams will only be allowed one support vehicle on race day. Vehicles lacking an official race sticker won't be allowed to park near the exchange zones. Two vehicle requests will only be considered for teams that expect to average sub 6 minute miles or for racers using a wheelchair.

Where can spectators watch?

Spectators are not allowed to park in zones designated for support vehicles.  The following locations are recommended for spectating:

  • Channahon State Park in Channahon

  • Gebhard Woods State Park in Morris

  • The downtown areas of Seneca, Marseilles, Ottawa, North Utica and LaSalle (the finish area)

What if there is inclement weather?

This event will be held rain or shine.
